Honoring Veterans at the FOP Lodge #5 Veterans Day 5K Fun Run

The Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) Limestone Lodge #5 hosted its first-ever Veterans Day 5K Fun Run on November 9, 2024, at Maysville/Mason County Recreation Park in Old Washington. Under the motto “Run for those who stood for us,” this event brought the community together to honor veterans and raise funds for local causes. Proceeds will support programs like Christmas with Cops and scholarships for local students, ensuring that the impact of this day will be felt for years to come.

Supporting Local Heroes and Community Programs

FOP Limestone Lodge #5, which represents law enforcement officers across Bracken, Fleming, and Mason Counties, is committed to supporting both officers and the community. By organizing events like the Veterans Day 5K Fun Run, the Lodge brings together people who want to make a difference. The funds raised benefit various local programs, providing essential resources for families and individuals alike.

Race Highlights and Celebrated Finishers

The Fun Run saw an enthusiastic turnout with 19 participants. Leading the men’s division was John Bess, who finished with a time of 20:38. Kayla Lykins topped the female division with a time of 21:21. Veterans were also honored, with Xandy Stewart finishing as the fastest male veteran at 31:21 and Sarah Simms-Bingmann completing the course as the top female veteran and walker in 55:30. Each top finisher received a commemorative Challenge coin from the FOP, symbolizing the community’s respect and gratitude for their service.

Dedicated Runners: Honoring Loved Ones Through Every Mile

An especially moving aspect of the event was the chance for participants to dedicate their runs to specific veterans. This allowed runners to pay personal tributes and remember loved ones. For example, Marjoe Jennings dedicated his run to Jim Jennings and Dennis Lockard, whose courage inspired him to serve. These dedications added a heartfelt layer to the Fun Run, creating connections between the participants and those they ran to honor.

A Community Effort: Gratitude for Volunteers and Organizers

The event’s success was possible only with the help of dedicated volunteers. The Fraternal Order of Police Auxiliary and the JROTC from Mason County High School played essential roles in managing logistics, registration, and on-site support. Maysville Police Officers, Mason County Sheriff’s Deputies, and volunteer firefighters assisted with traffic control to ensure everyone’s safety. Their collective dedication created a smooth and memorable experience for all attendees. FOP Lodge #5 deeply appreciates each volunteer’s contribution.

Looking Ahead: Building a Lasting Tradition

With a successful event behind them, FOP Limestone Lodge #5 is already planning for next year’s Veterans Day 5K Fun Run. The Lodge envisions this 5K becoming an annual tradition, providing the community with a chance to gather, honor veterans, and support local initiatives. Each year, they hope to welcome even more participants and expand the impact of this inspiring event.
